Sujata Majumdar (b.1976, London) is a visual and transdisciplinary artist based in Amsterdam. She has a background in Photography, Physics, and Information Technology. Her background in different disciplines and cultures (British, of Indian descent, residing in the Netherlands since 2001), drives her artistic endeavour and pushes her to explore intersections and to hybridise apparently unrelated ideas and matter. Her work demonstrates her fascination for forms and patterns that transcend scale, especially at the shifting interface of ‘nature’ and ‘human-made’. Her photographic style has been deeply influenced by scientific two-dimensional representation such as physics diagrams and microscopy slides. Lens-based imagery often forms the basis of deeper interdisciplinary exploration and artistic research; in 2018-19 she was Crossing Parallels (TU Delft & TodaysArt) artist in residence, in collaboration with Professor Stephen Picken on A Cure for Concrete, a project evolving directly from the photography series Concrete Abstraction.
She is Head of Pattern Formation at the Institute of Unnecessary Research and is currently taking part in a two-year exhibition programme at Cyclic Matter, centre for art and ecology in Portugal.
